This Symposium aims to bring together researchers and public health actors to present, document and debate prospects for action in NCD surveillance, management, control and prevention, within the context of the recent geo-political developments in the region.

The Symposium organizers are looking forward to vibrant and engaging abstracts that revolve around non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and:

- Displacement and migration

- War and conflict

- Socio-political transformations

- Demographic transitions

- Capacity building, training and education

- National health systems and provision of care in times of crisis

Dawn Chatty (Professor of Anthropology and Forced Migration, Director of Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford University, UK)

Rita Giacaman (Professor of Public Health, Institute of Community & Public Health, Birzeit University, West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory

Habiba Ben Romdhane

(Health Minister for Tunisia, Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology & Prevention Research Department, University of Tunis)

 

Nigel Unwin (Professor of Public Health & Epidemiology, University of the West Indies, Barbados)

 

We invite applications for oral or poster presentations from a range of disciplines, including social epidemiology, environmental health, health policy, health economics, medical sociology or anthropology, and medical geography. Abstracts should be no more than 400 words. Submissions from researchers who are at an early or mid-career stage are particularly encouraged. Accepted abstracts will be fully or partially funded.

 

The Symposium is organized by RESCAP-MED and the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB). RESCAP-MED is a network of public health research institutes in the region, partnered with institutes in the UK and Ireland and the WHO-EMRO, to enhance research capacity in NCD research and public health. Following the Symposium, FHS-AUB invites you to join their 60th Anniversary Scientific Conference entitled “Public Health in Contexts of Uncertainty” scheduled on December 5-6, 2014.
